This year's Burning Man festival has a frightening theme

Burning Man

Burning Man doesn't even start until August 30th, but it's already off to a rocky start.

First, there was the infestation of giant green bugs that, according to Burning Man's official blog, "bite, crawl all over you, and get up and in you."

The bugs have apparently since "dried up and blown away," but in a new blog post from Saturday, festival organizers sarcastically warned that "Bugpocalypse was just a warm up to our possibly most menacing problem. The clowns are waiting with painted smiles to welcome you to Black Rock City."

Burning Man's official art theme this year is "Carnival of Mirrors," hence the imminent scary clown costumes.

scary clownsAccording to the blog post from the weekend, "This is not going to be a good year for clown fearing folks... prepare for Sad Clown Town."

They wander around town even now, shapes in the darkness, ducking behind containers, appearing then disappearing at meetings. They’ve applied their make-up that is becoming caked with alkaline playa dust and is slowly fading each day. Prepare for Sad Clown Town. And beware Plug and Players, the clowns have your number. Locate, Tag, Track and Acculturate. Participate or clowns will eat you. My advice is to befriend a clown as soon as possible upon arrival. They are a hive mind and they can sense your intentions and fear.

...And don’t worry about the bugs. Clowns are far scarier.

clown circus This year's festival will be set up a bit like an old-fashioned carnival, complete with a funhouse at the center that "will contemplate the puzzle of self-consciousness."

At the heart of this disorienting maze, a final passage will reveal a courtyard that surrounds the Burning Man. Photo booths will here record the faces of participants, merging them into a swirling stream that will envelop the entire body of the Man. The brittle mirror and the occulting mask will melt away, and at this point there’ll be no gag, no swag, no souvenir of self; the show will be you.

The "Carnival of Mirrors" theme was first announced on the Burning Man website with this creepy video:

Meet the 24-year-old breakout star of 'Fear the Walking Dead'

frank dillane fear the walking dead 1

Remember the name Frank Dillane. You'll be hearing a lot about him in the coming weeks.

The 24-year-old actor captured the attention of viewers during Sunday's season premiere of AMC's "Walking Dead" companion series, "Fear the Walking Dead." Not just a handsome face, he certainly did a great job during some of the premiere episode's most exciting scenes.

GettyImages 482584256 frank dillane fear the walking deadHere's some things to know about Frank Dillane:

Acting is the family business.
Dillane's father is Stephen Dillane, an actor on "Game of Thrones" who was nominated for an Emmy for his role on miniseries "John Adams." Stephen and Frank worked together on a couple films, including the feature film, "Papadopoulos & Sons."

Dillane's mother, Naomi Wirthner, is the director and co-founder of a theater company called Barebones Project.

He's already sort of familiar with zombies. He apparently played one at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in a student film. He graduated from RADA in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in acting.

The London-born actor worked with a dialogue coach for "Fear the Walking Dead."
"Dialect was my biggest fear, so I spent a long time working with dialect coaches just trying to get American down," he told Entertainment Weekly. "I think it’s very important and very easy to misinterpret. So, I mean I haven’t seen the pilot yet, so I am not sure as to whether I did a good job yet or not, but the accent is certainly my biggest fear."

You may remember him from a little role in 2009's "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."

Tom Riddle 16 frank dillane harry potterOK, so not a little part at all. He played Tom Riddle  basically Lord Voldermort at 16-years-old.

Tom Riddle 16 frank dillane harry potter 2

His fans still love him in the role.

And although it wasn't a big role, he was memorable on Netflix's "Sense8" earlier this year.

Dillane played Shugs, Riley's (Tuppence Middleton) close friend.

This year, Dillane also stars in the Ron Howard film "In the Heart of the Sea" alongside Chris Hemsworth.

The film was supposed to be out in March, but it has been pushed to December.

His next film is about a punk band on tour. It's called "Viena and the Fantomes" and has a pretty stellar cast: Zoë Kravitz, Dakota Fanning, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jon Bernthal.

For now, catch Frank Dillane on AMC's "Fear the Walking Dead" Sundays at 9 p.m.

Here's why 68-year-old Susan Sarandon loves going to Burning Man

Susan Sarandon has spoken openly about her love of Burning Man and it appears the 68-year-old actress is back for another round of the festival this year.

And tech writer Nellie Bowles even spotted the Oscar winner helping out on the playa during the first day of the week-long festival:

But Sarandon is no stranger to Burning Man.

The actress first went to the festival two years ago. After the experience, she spoke to The Daily Beast about why she loved it:

It’s fabulous. I went all around on a Segway and a bicycle, which was great, and even though people sometimes recognized me and said, 'Oh, it’s so cool you’re here!' it wasn’t like walking the streets of New York. The art was amazing. You’ll find fantastical stuff like four-story women, and when the light comes up, a half-naked woman with a parasol. Despite the fact that there was more of a police presence there, it was a lot of fun and I’d definitely go back.

Sarandon had to opt out of the festival last year because her daughter was due to give birth at any moment. "I don’t think I’d feel very free to indulge if I was waiting for a message to see if she’s gone into labor," she explained.

But when Sarandon is free of responsibility, she told the Beast she definitely lets loose and experiments with drugs:

Well, it’s pretty psychedelic to begin with. But, yeah, I’m not new to the idea of mushrooms. I don’t really like chemical things, really... But I’ve done Ayahuasca [psychedelic tea] and I’ve done mushrooms and things like that. But I like those drugs in the outdoors — I’m not a city-tripper. My attitude about marijuana or anything is, 'Don’t be stoned if you have to pretend you’re not,' so I’d never do drugs if I was taking care of my kids. I like doing it in the Grand Canyon, or in the woods. It does remind you of your space in the universe—your place in the universe—and reframe things for you. I think you can have some very profound experiences.

Susan Sarandon Goldie HawnSarandon isn't the only Hollywood celebrity to attend Burning Man. Last year, Will Smith was spotted performing a choreographed dance on a Segway in the middle of the desert.

3 simple ways to instantly appear successful

$

David BeckhamPeople decide if you're successful within five seconds of meeting you.

It's called "thin slicing," or the psychological tendency for people to make almost instantaneous assumptions about you.

It happens all the time, including at work. Research suggests that colleagues and would-be clients make snap assessments about your earning potential, chance of getting promoted, and level of success.

For example, in a 2011 Canadian study, 87 university students were shown photos of a man in professional or casual dress, and were asked what they expected his workplace outcomes to be.

The differences were obvious. Not only were the well-dressed men expected to make more money, they were expected to be promoted more rapidly. Meanwhile, the sloppily dressed guys were expected to receive more verbal harassment at work.

What can we do to sidestep negative judgments and instantly appear successful? Scroll down to see what the experts advise.

SEE ALSO: Science says people decide these 9 things within seconds of meeting you

Look like you care about how you look.

"Carelessness seems to signal that you don't respect your coworkers or yourself," says Sylvia Ann Hewlett, author of "Executive Presence." "You certainly don't respect the client if you show up with soup on your tie or bitten nails, anything to make you look unkempt."

Tailor your look to the situation.

"If it's Microsoft, it's one outfit; in the US Army, it's another," says longtime executive recruiter Russell Reynolds. "You have to look like you belong to the group, [and] you have to look a little better than the group." To do that, Hewlett says to "pattern yourself" after someone who's particularly good at dressing a bit better than the rest of the group.

Stay away from the suggestive.

"For women, a major blunder is sexually provocative clothing,"Hewlett says. "It's tremendously undermining of your gravitas, because it's either distracting or threatening. No matter your projection of your capabilities, if your skirt is too short or your neckline too plunging, you get struck off the list for a big client meeting or a promotion."

Jon Stewart is going to Congress with one of the most important issues of his career

Jon Stewart

Making sure the 9/11 responders are adequately cared for was one of Jon Stewart's signature causes while hosting "The Daily Show."

In his post-"Daily Show" career, he's keeping up the fight.

On Wednesday, September 16, Stewart plans to walk the halls of Congress with 100 responders from the World Trade Center attacks. They plan is to appeal to congressional representatives to renew the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, according to The Huffington Post.

The law, which provides for dedicated and sophisticated healthcare coverage and health research for 9/11 responders, did not pass until 2010. People who were on the ground on 9/11 are disproportionately linked to high rates of cancer and lung problems. Stewart dedicated numerous segments to the bill on "The Daily Show" in the week leading up to Congress' vote on it.

He rallied against Republican lawmakers who objected to the bill because it was linked to a tax raise, and his attention is credited with turning the tide towards the bill's eventual passage.

Funding for parts of the act are set to expire in October. Weeks before the end of his show, Stewart discussed the subject of renewing the bill with New York Senator Kristin Gillibrand on his show.

"More first responders have died since 9/11 from being on the pile, from those diseases, than on 9/11 itself. Insane," Stewart said.

Stewart's response on his show to the 9/11 attacks marked a change where "The Daily Show" became more serious. Following the attacks, he famously dedicated a segment to questioning the purpose of comedy in times of tragedy, and mourned those who died in the attacks and the absence of the World Trade Center from the New York City skyline.

"The view from my apartment was the World Trade Center and now it’s gone," Stewart said. "They attacked it. This symbol of American ingenuity and strength and labor and imagination and commerce and it is gone."

50 Cent is bragging about his new home in Africa 2 months after filing for bankruptcy

50 centRapper Curtis Jackson, a.k.a. 50 Cent filed for bankruptcy almost two months ago, but that won't stop him from living well, and making sure people know about it.

Over the weekend, the rapper posted a video to Instagram detailing his newest investment — a massive home currently being built in Africa.

"My crib is almost finished in AFRICA," he said in the caption. "I'm gonna have the craziest House warming party ever. I'll explain later — I got a good life Man."

The "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" rapper made headlines just two weeks ago for putting his enormous 21-bedroom home back on the market. The 50,000-square-foot property reportedly costs him $72,000 per month to maintain. The home was originally listed at $18.5 million, but will now sell for far less.

In May, Forbes listed 50 Cent's net worth at $155 million, but that number later proved to be misleading.

The rapper currently owes $7 million to a woman named Lastonia Leviston who won the payment in court after 50 Cent released a sex tape of her to the public as payback to his nemesis, Rick Ross, who fathered a child with Leviston.

He also owes an $18 million court-ordered payment to Sleek Audio after a partnership to produce headphones failed. The filings total $25 million, the same amount 50 Cent claims in assets.

50 cent sleek50 Cent loves using social media to show off his possessions, but admitted during his bankruptcy case that he tricked the world into believing he was richer than he actually is.

On "Larry King Now" in July, 50 Cent claimed his bankruptcy filing was not because he was broke, but a "strategic" move.

"It’s a move that was necessary for me to make at this point so I didn’t allow myself to create that big red and white bulls-eye on my back, where I become the person that people consistently come to."

Either way, it seems as if 50 Cent is still doing just fine.

Sean Penn files $10 million defamation lawsuit against 'Empire' creator Lee Daniels

Sean Penn Jason Merritt Getty

Sean Penn has filed a $10 million defamation lawsuit against "Empire" creator Lee Daniels. The defamation complaint filed on Tuesday asserts that in Daniels' recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Penn was falsely accused of hitting women by being likened to "Empire" star Terrence Howard.

"[Terrence] ain't done nothing different than Marlon Brando or Sean Penn, and all of a sudden he's some f—in' demon," Daniels told THR in reference to to Howard's legal troubles. "That's a sign of the time, of race, of where we are right now in America."

Lee Daniels Ben Gabbe GettyNow, Penn has retained former federal prosecutor Mathew Rosengart, who declined to comment, but referred THR to the first paragraph of the complaint, which states, "As a result of Penn's status as a public figure, he has for years been the subject of scandalous, scurrilous, and baseless attacks. But Penn, like any citizen, has a right to defend himself and will no longer tolerate the reckless and malicious behavior of others, who seek to aggrandize themselves or their projects at his expense. Amy_Schumer book deal

The year of Amy Schumer continues as news that the "Trainwreck" star has landed a seven to eight-figure book deal is making the rounds.

According to THR, the book, which is titled "The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo," was bought by Simon & Schuster imprint, Gallery Books.

It's "a series of comedic essays looking at the Emmy-winning star's family, childhood and feminist politics," THR reports.

According to EW, the comedienne sold her book for an $8 to 10 million sum. THR's sources were only able to confirm that bids topped $6.5 million.

While EW reported that bidding ended on Friday, THR's sources say that bidding continued through Monday afternoon.

According to EW's version, Schumer's agent sent the proposal to every publishing house in Manhattan. And publishers couldn't even get a meeting with Schumer unless they made a bid on the book first.

THR's sources say that editors had to go to the agent's office to read the proposal and that eight publishers made a bid.

With this big deal, Schumer joins the likes of other funny gals who've turned to writing books, including Tina Fey, Mindy Kaling, and Amy Poehler.

Schumer's representatives didn't immediately respond to Business Insider's request for confirmation.

Note: This article was updated to reflect THR's later report.

Caitlyn Jenner probably won't be prosecuted for causing a fatal car crash

It's unlikely Caitlyn Jenner will face prosecution for causing a car crash that killed a woman in Malibu on February 1.

Sources from the Los Angeles District Attorney's office told TMZ that although Jenner's actions caused the fatal car crash, they are considered negligent, not criminal.

There's still a chance that the L.A. D.A. herself, Jackie Lacey, will decide to prosecute Jenner for manslaughter anyway, but the site's sources say that's unlikely.

A single misdemeanor manslaughter charge could mean a yearlong jail sentence.

Last month, a Sheriff Department's report showed that Jenner's actions "put into motion" the chain of events that led to the death of Kim Howe. Jenner's vehicle pushed Howe's into oncoming traffic and then it hit another vehicle holding five people. Jenner was actually driving below the speed limit, but at an unsafe speed for the road conditions that day, the report determined.

Jenner has argued that her speed was not illegal and expressed concern over prisons and how they treat transgender people when she appeared on "Today" recently.

Even if Jenner doesn't get prosecuted for manslaughter, it's still possible that the victims of the crash or their estate could sue her for in civil court for millions of dollars.

A spokesperson for the L.A. D.A.'s office told Business Insider in an emailed statement, "We have no comment on the TMZ posting. No decision has been made."

In a recent interview with Extra for the new season of his show "The Leftovers," Theroux, explained why he and Aniston decided on inviting friends on their honeymoon.

"We had thought about it; we could just do a normal honeymoon, or we could go with some friends, keep the party going, relax, and have fun," Theroux said. "It was really special, it was really beautiful."

But beauty comes with a price.

If you're planning on partying like Justin and Jen, just know staying at the Four Seasons in Bora Bora will run you between $5,000 and $12,500 per night.

Samuel L. Jackson wrote a letter to a judge to get out of jury duty

No one likes jury duty—okay, I’m sure there are some of you out there, but most of us dread getting that summons in the mail and view it as a huge pain in the ass. For all the talk of doing your civic duty, it’s a chore that most of us hope and scheme to get out of any which way we can. As it turns out, being a movie actor has other perks besides fame and money and all the usual stuff: it can get you out of jury duty.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, late last week, Samuel L. Jackson was dismissed from serving on a jury when he said that the time spent in court would interfere and conflict with his work on an upcoming movie.

Jackson reportedly wrote a note to a Los Angeles Superior Court judge named Richard Fruin, stating that he will be working on a movie well into October. Though the report does not mention which project this is, considering that Jackson has north of 160 credits on his resume, it could be any number—the man likes to stay busy.

He said that not only would his own job and finances be impacted, but that his time away from the production would have a wider reach as well. Other members of the cast and crew of the film wouldn’t be able to work in his absence, thus they would also be negatively affected. That seems to indicate that, whatever film he’s working on, he has a fairly important, sizeable part.

In addition to stating his concerns, Jackson did say that serving on a jury is a "privilege," and that, when he has more time, he is keen on the idea. Talking about the other prospective jurors in his pool "were a good group of people."

Whatever argument he made, he must have been convincing (come on, he’s Samuel L. Jackson), because both the judge and the attorneys involved in the case all agreed to acquiesce to his request and dismiss him from duty.

For what it’s worth, the case Jackson caught sounds like it would have been an in depth and time consuming affair, not just a one or two day thing. A woman is suing Janssen Research & Development, a pharmaceutical company and member of the Johnson & Johnson family. She claims that her schizophrenic son died as a result of a drug study that involved Risperdal, an antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. There’s a big lawsuit currently in the works about aggressive marketing of the drug and it’s side effects, which include stroke and boys growing large breasts (one young man reportedly grew a 46DD bust). All in all, that sounds like that will be an intense time in court.

Ex-Scientologist actress Leah Remini is writing a 'bravely confessional' tell-all memoir

Leah Remini

Actress Leah Remini has never been shy about sharing her opinion, and that will continue in a new book she'll be writing about her experience with Scientology.

Publisher Ballantine Books has announced that the former “King of Queens” star will be releasing a “bold, brash, and bravely confessional tell-all memoir" about her religious experience.

The book, titled Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology (due out November 3), “shares her deeply moving eye-opening account of her thirty-year-plus association with the Church of Scientology,” according Ballantine's press release.

Remini left the church in July 2013 when she questioned the validity of excommunication of people by the church. Once she left Scientology, she spoke out about the disappearance of her friend, Shelly Miscavige, who was the wife of the church's leader David Miscavige.

She even filed a missing persons report for Shelly with the Los Angeles Police Department.

The church told Business Insider in March that the police declared Remini’s missing persons report "unfounded" two years ago and that Shelly “continues in the church as she always has.”

kirstie alleyRemini has received some backlash for her decision to leave Scientology. Scientology member, actress Kirstie Alley, called Remini“repulsive” and “a bigot” during an interview on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show in 2013

But former Scientology members have applauded Remini for leaving, like filmmaker Paul Haggis, who wrote an open letter in The Hollywood Reporter about it. “I can’t express how much I admire Leah," he wrote. "Her parents, family and close friends were almost all Scientologists; the stakes for her were so much higher than for me. Her decision to leave was so much braver…”

According to people who have left the church, the decision to leave means that anyone who you knew that is still a Scientologist is required to excommunicate themselves with you, including family members.

The HBO documentary “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of the Belief” gave an unflattering look at the church and the inhumane acts its members allegedly go through.

Remini did not take part in the film.

Business Insider has reached out to the Church of Scientology for comment for this story but has not yet received a reply.

Inside the compound where the missing wife of Scientology's leader might be living

David Miscavige

David Miscavige, the leader of the Church of Scientology, is one of the best-known Scientologists in the world. But Miscavige's wife, Shelly Miscavige, hasn't been seen in public since 2007.

The Church of Scientology says Shelly Miscavige isn't missing, and she hasn't been kidnapped. Instead, Scientology says she has been working inside the church.

The disappearance of Shelly Miscavige continues to be a high-profile mystery for Scientology critics and former members. A 2014 Vanity Fair article referred to Shelly Miscavige as "Scientology’s Vanished Queen."

Filmmaker Alex Gibney's 2015 Scientology documentary "Going Clear" passes over the disappearance of Shelly Miscavige, instead focusing on testimonies from former Scientology members and the history of the organisation's founder, L. Ron Hubbard.

Steve Hall, a former Scientologist who left the church in 2004 after spending the previous 17 years at its international management level as a senior writer of its marketing materials, spoke with Business Insider about where Shelly Miscavige might be. He thinks Shelly is at Scientology's little-known Church of Spiritual Technology, a remote forest compound with prison-like security in Twin Peaks, California, near San Bernardino.

It's important to note that Shelly Miscavige may not actually be held against her will. Instead, she may have been convinced that she must stay at the remote compound to make up for any alleged crimes she may have committed against the Church of Scientology. The 2014 Vanity Fair article says Miscavige was responsible for restructuring the upper levels of Scientology, but she told a former Scientology member at her father's funeral that she had "f----d up."

One person who has visited the compound is "Angry Gay Pope," the nom de guerre of an Anonymous activist who has staged protests against Scientology. In 2010, he took these pictures of the CST compound in Twin Peaks, documenting its spiked fences, razor wire, motion detectors, infrared spotlights, satellite dishes, fuel tanks, and mysterious semipermanent trailers.

Model Gigi Hadid had the perfect response to haters critiquing her body on Instagram

Gigi Hadid models

Model Gigi Hadid has been everywhere lately strutting down runways from New York to Milan.

But apparently not all of her 6.5 million Instagram followers are fans of the 20-year-old''s looks.

Gigi HadidAfter receiving some rude remarks about her curves, Hadid took to Instagram Monday morning to shut down the haters.

After admitting "I did let the negativity get to me a little," Hadid went on to defend herself:

"I represent a body a body image that wasn’t accepted in high-fashion before, and I’m very lucky to be supported by designers, stylists, and editors... Yes I have boobs, I have abs, I have a butt, I have thighs, but I’m not asking for special treatment. I’m fitting into the sample sizes."

She continued: "I’m a hard worker that’s confident in myself, one that came at a time where the fashion industry was ready for a change."

Read Hadid's passionate full post below:

So many people are so quick to comment negative opinions this month. Yes, judgement on social media comes from people who, 99% of the time, have no idea what they’re talking about, but I’m human, and I’m not going to lie, I did let the negativity get to me a little.

No, I don’t have the same body type as the other models in shows. No, I don’t think I’m the best at any given show. Yes, I want to have a unique walk but I also know I have to improve. No, I’m not the first or the last model of my type in this industry. You can make up all the reasons you think I am where I am, but really, I’m a hard worker that’s confident in myself, one that came at a time where the fashion industry was ready for a change. I’m just doing my job.

I represent a body a body image that wasn’t accepted in high-fashion before, and I’m very lucky to be supported by designers, stylists, and editors that I am: ones that know this is fashion, it’s art; it can never stay the same. It’s 2015. But if you’re not one of those people, don’t take your anger out on me. Yes I have boobs, I have abs, I have a butt, I have thighs, but I’m not asking for special treatment. I’m fitting into the sample sizes.

Your mean comments don’t make me want to change my body, they don’t make me want to say no to the designers that ask me to be in their shows, and they definitely don’t change the designers opinions of me. If they want me in their shows, I’m in it; if they don’t, I’m not. That’s just how it is and how it will be. If you don’t like it, don’t follow me, don’t watch me, cause I’m not going anywhere. If I didn’t have the body I do, I wouldn’t have the career I do. I love that I can be sexy. I’m proud of it.

The comments on Hadid's post have been overwhelmingly positive:

Hadid comments

Kris Jenner, whose daughters Kendall and Kylie are BFF with Hadid, re-posted the model's message and wrote her own caption in support of the young model:

This is from one of the sweetest, smartest, and most beautiful girl inside and out, in the world. Why do people with no life, no purpose, who are angry and bitter and ignorant, or just plain nasty and mean, choose to bring everyone else down instead of finding the best in others? I will never understand the BULLYS that lurk on Instagram just to try and ruin someone else's spirit. If all of their horrible negative energy was focused on being positive and seeing good, imagine what a better more peaceful place this world would be. Spread love and joy everyone, not hate. It only reflects what kind of person you are. Something good might come of it...lift others up. Do unto others as you would like done to you....Love One Another. ❤ #Repost @gigihadid
